Evidence and tools for locally led adaptation
IIED is working to document, research and provide high-quality evidence, tools and resources to support the locally led adaptation (LLA) principles to be put into practice. This includes across sectors related to LLA such as urban resilience, nature and finance.

Transitioning to locally led adaptation means supporting local communities with enough resources, including context-specific and high-quality evidence and tools, to respond and adjust to their changing circumstances and needs as a result of climate change.
Providing evidence on LLA and devolved climate finance, backed by examples of approaches used in practice, will also support efforts to engage potential actors, including donors, to support LLA efforts. Additionally, this creates a basis for local and international actors to collaborate to accelerate the LLA principles being put into practice.
What is IIED doing?
IIED and partners are building on the experiences of LLA mechanisms to further develop the body of evidence of these being put in practice, demonstrating that LLA works on the ground.
For example, an interactive map of LLA experiences has been developed that show cases where different approaches to locally led adaptation have flourished around the world and provides examples of the eight principles of LLA in action.
We will document evidence on the diversity of LLA models and lessons and conduct research to support partners to implement LLA. We will also compile LLA tools and resources across the different sectors that relate to LLA, including urban resilience, nature and finance.
This work will include:
- Carrying out original, rigorous research with partners
- Documenting case studies or other evidence from partner countries’ and organisations’ experiences
- The development of tools and resources, and
- Strengthening the capacity of local actors to document their experiences and lessons on locally-led action.
